"Things have changed after May 2014, and topmost priority is being accorded to key projects. Delayed infra projects were negatively affecting India's growth trajectory," PM Modi said after inaugurating the Bogibeel bridge.

Calling it a historic accomplishment that will enhance connectivity into the Northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the nation's longest rail-cum-road bridge in Bogibeel within the Brahmaputra river in Assam. The inauguration of the bridge coincided with the birth anniversary of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, under whose government the job for the bridge began in 2002.

Addressing a public assembly at Assam's Dhemaji district, Modi took a veiled dig at the erstwhile Congress government, saying after Vajpayee lost electricity in 2004 several crucial infrastructure jobs of his era were not finished, which, consequently, negatively affected the states' development trajectory.

"Vajpayee ji needed a vision to the growth of the Bogibeel bridge. This bridge can be a tribute to the fantasy of Atal Ji. When Vajpayee's government lost power in 2004, several key infrastructure projects of his era weren't finished," Modi said.

The Bogibeel project was part of the 1985 Assam Accord and has been sanctioned in 1997-98.
The PM also reinforces the fact that following the BJP government assumed office in 2014; priority was accorded to important projects and their fast completion was also guaranteed. "Things have changed after May 2014, and topmost priority has been accorded to key jobs. Delayed infra projects were adversely impacting India's development trajectory. When we assumed office, we included rate to such projects," the PM said.

After inaugurating the bridge which connects Dhemaji and Dibrugarh, Modi and his cavalcade took a ride, stopping in the middle and waving at thousands of people waiting on both sides. The train will operate five days per week.

The bridge would help the patients in North East with enhanced connectivity and faster transportation, the PM said.

"The people of Assam have made a solid contribution to the evolution of our nation. Many stalwarts out of Assam were involved in the freedom struggle as well," he said.

The double-decker bridge, the fourth across the Brahmaputra, has two Railroad lines on the deck and also a three-lane road on the upper, powerful enough to withstand movement of heavy army tanks.

The Bogibeel Bridge that will have a serviceable period of around 120 years is India's only fully welded bridge for which European Welding criteria were adhered to for the first time in the nation.
